Stretch Selvedge Denim | Flint and Tinder
Our stretch selvedge denim represents everything we stand for: authentic American craftsmanship meets modern performance. We partnered with one of Japan's finest mills to create a 12.5oz selvedge fabric that delivers the rigid structure and character selvedge enthusiasts demand, enhanced with 2% stretch for mobility you'll notice from the first wear.
Every pair is cut and sewn in North Carolina by skilled craftspeople who've been making jeans for decades. The fabric features a clean indigo warp with natural slub texture and that iconic selvedge ID line running up the outseam. Unlike mass-market stretch denim that feels synthetic, our blend maintains the crisp hand and fading potential of traditional selvedge while giving you freedom to move through your day.

Premium Japanese Selvedge Fabric with Modern Stretch

We sourced this flint and tinder stretch selvedge denim from a Japanese mill that’s been weaving selvedge on vintage shuttle looms since the 1950s. The 12.5oz weight sits in the sweet spot between lightweight summer denim and heavyweight workwear—substantial enough to develop authentic fades and whiskers over time, but comfortable enough for year-round wear.
The 2% elastane is woven directly into the fabric during production, not added as a coating. This means the stretch is permanent and won’t wash out or degrade. You get the crisp texture and natural indigo depth that selvedge collectors expect, with enough give to crouch, climb stairs, or ride a bike without restriction. The clean selvedge edge along the outseam proves this fabric came from a narrow shuttle loom, maintaining the traditional construction method that produces tighter, more durable denim than modern projectile looms.
Cut and Construction Details

Every pair is manufactured in our North Carolina facility where experienced sewers handle each step of construction. We use chain-stitched hems that will unravel naturally over time to create authentic roping, triple-stitched main seams for durability, and bartack reinforcements at the pocket corners and fly.
The fit is a modern straight leg with a mid-rise waist that sits comfortably at your natural waistline. We designed the top block with enough room through the seat and thigh to accommodate the athletic builds of guys who actually move during the day, then tapered the leg opening slightly for a clean contemporary silhouette. Five-pocket styling includes rear pockets positioned to flatter, while the watch pocket is sized to actually hold a lighter or keys. Our branded leather patch and custom hardware complete the package without unnecessary branding.
Sizing and Fit Guidance

Raw vs. One-Wash
We offer two finish options. Raw Indigo arrives unwashed and will shrink approximately one inch in the waist and two inches in length after the first soak. One-Wash comes pre-shrunk and ready to wear with minimal additional shrinkage. Most customers who want maximum fading potential choose Raw and size up one inch in the waist.
Finding Your Size
Measure your best-fitting jeans flat across the waistband and compare to our size chart. The stretch in this selvedge denim provides about a half-inch of give in the waist after break-in, so order your true waist size rather than sizing down. Inseam options run from 30″ to 36″ in one-inch increments. If you’re between sizes or prefer a relaxed fit through the thigh, size up—the straight leg cut prevents any excessive bagging.

Common Questions About Our Stretch Selvedge Denim
The raw finish will shrink about one inch in the waist and up to two inches in length after the first soak. Once broken in over two to three weeks, the 2% elastane provides approximately half an inch of stretch in the waist. This means you should order your true waist size—the fabric will conform to your body without stretching out excessively like some pure cotton denim.
Raw Indigo arrives untreated and will shrink significantly when first soaked, offering maximum contrast fading potential for denim enthusiasts who want to create personalized wear patterns. One-Wash comes pre-shrunk with minimal additional shrinkage, ready to wear immediately with slightly softer hand feel. Both use identical Japanese selvedge fabric—the choice depends on whether you want the raw denim experience or immediate wearability.
Yes, the indigo dye and fabric construction allow these to develop authentic fades, whiskers, and honeycombs identical to rigid selvedge. The 2% stretch content doesn't affect fading characteristics—you'll see natural wear patterns at high-friction areas like knees, thighs, and pockets over time. Many customers report excellent fading after six months of regular wear with minimal washing.
Our stretch selvedge denim runs true to size with a mid-rise and straight leg similar to Levi's 501 or 505 cuts, but with a slightly more tapered leg opening for a modern look. If you wear a 32-inch waist in Levi's, order 32 in our jeans. The top block has more room through the seat and thigh than slim-fit styles, making them comfortable for athletic builds.
You can machine wash on cold gentle cycle turned inside out, but we strongly recommend hang drying only. Heat from a dryer will cause unwanted shrinkage and degrade the elastane fibers over time, reducing the stretch properties and shortening the lifespan of the denim. Air drying preserves both the fit and the fabric integrity for years of wear.
We cut and sew every pair in our North Carolina facility using skilled American workers. The selvedge fabric is woven in Japan on vintage shuttle looms, then shipped to us for construction. All finishing, hardware attachment, and quality inspection happens domestically. This combination gives you premium Japanese fabric with American craftsmanship and quality control.
We offer inseams from 30 to 36 inches in one-inch increments at checkout. For custom hemming beyond these options, we recommend taking your jeans to a tailor experienced with selvedge denim who can preserve the chain-stitched hem or create a clean raw hem. Many customers prefer to have selvedge denim hemmed with the original selvedge edge exposed for an authentic look.
