Moleskin Shirt Jacket – Flint and Tinder
We built the Moleskin Shirt Jacket for guys who refuse to choose between style and substance. This is the kind of layer you'll reach for every morning from fall through spring — rugged enough for weekend chores, refined enough for your favorite downtown bar.
We source heavyweight Portuguese cotton moleskin for its signature brushed finish and incredible durability. The fabric breaks in beautifully without breaking down, developing character with every wear. Cut and sewn in our Pennsylvania workshop, this jacket features reinforced stitching at every stress point, genuine corozo buttons, and a fit that works perfectly over a tee or layered over a flannel.
This isn't fast fashion. We design our moleskin shirt jacket to last years, not seasons, and we back that promise with construction details that matter: double-needle flat-felled seams, bartacked pockets, and a collar that holds its shape wash after wash.

Portuguese Moleskin Fabric

Moleskin earned its name centuries ago from its dense, suede-like hand feel — soft as the animal’s coat but built from pure cotton. We work exclusively with a Portuguese mill that’s perfected the weaving and brushing process over four generations.
The fabric starts as tightly woven cotton, then undergoes a specialized brushing treatment that raises the surface fibers without compromising the tight weave underneath. This gives you the plush texture moleskin is famous for while maintaining exceptional tear resistance. At 8.5 ounces per square yard, our moleskin strikes the ideal balance: substantial enough to block wind and resist abrasion, but breathable enough to wear comfortably indoors.
Sizing and Fit Details

True to Size Shirt Jacket Cut
We designed the flint and tinder moleskin shirt jacket with a relaxed fit that accommodates layering without looking boxy. The shoulders align with your natural shoulder line, and the body provides enough room to comfortably wear a hoodie or heavy flannel underneath.
Sleeve length hits right at your wrist bone when arms are at your sides. The body length falls just below the belt line — long enough to stay tucked if you prefer, short enough to wear untucked without bunching. Chest width across the front measures approximately 23 inches on a size Medium laid flat.
Made in USA Construction

Every Flint and Tinder moleskin shirt jacket is cut, sewn, and finished in our Pennsylvania workshop by experienced garment makers. We chose domestic manufacturing because it gives us direct control over quality and allows us to support American craftsmanship.
Our production team uses industrial flatbed machines to create double-needle flat-felled seams — the same construction method found in premium denim. These seams lie completely flat against your body, eliminate raw edges, and create a clean finish inside and out. Every pocket corner gets bartacked for reinforcement. Button placements are marked by hand and sewn with reinforced stitching that prevents pull-through.

Moleskin Shirt Jacket Questions
Moleskin offers significantly more wind resistance and durability than flannel while maintaining similar softness. The tight cotton weave in our flint and tinder moleskin shirt jacket blocks wind and resists abrasion better than any flannel, making it more suitable as outerwear. Flannel works great as a layering piece underneath.
Moleskin also holds its shape and structure better through repeated wear and washing. Where flannel can become thin and pilled over time, moleskin maintains its brushed texture and actually improves with age.
The dense cotton weave provides some initial water resistance and will shed light mist or brief sprinkles, but moleskin is not waterproof. In steady rain, the fabric will eventually absorb moisture.
For wet weather, consider our waxed canvas options. The moleskin shirt jacket excels in dry cold and wind, making it ideal for fall and spring conditions. If you get caught in unexpected light rain, the jacket dries relatively quickly when hung in a warm room.
Most shirt jackets use lightweight cotton twill or chambray that works as a summer layer but lacks substance for true outerwear. Our moleskin shirt jacket uses heavyweight 8.5 oz Portuguese moleskin — substantially thicker and more wind-resistant than standard shirt jacket fabrics.
The construction also differs significantly. We use flat-felled seams throughout, bartacked reinforcements, and genuine corozo buttons. The jacket is cut and sewn in Pennsylvania with the same attention to detail we'd give a $300 coat. This is a serious outerwear piece that happens to have the styling of a shirt jacket.
The shoulder seam should align with your natural shoulder point — where your shoulder meets your arm. This creates a clean line and allows full range of motion without pulling or bunching.
If the shoulder seam falls down your arm, size down. If it sits on top of your shoulder creating divots, size up. The relaxed cut through the body provides layering room, but shoulders should fit true to your frame for the proper silhouette.
No, moleskin maintains its shape exceptionally well because of the tight cotton weave. You may notice the fabric softening and becoming more pliable with wear, but it won't stretch or bag out like jersey knits or thin wovens.
The flat-felled seam construction also prevents stress points from giving way. After years of wear, your flint and tinder moleskin shirt jacket will look broken-in and well-loved, but it will maintain the same fit and structure as when new.
Not at all. Despite its substantial weight, moleskin breathes well because it's 100% natural cotton. We wear ours comfortably indoors in climate-controlled spaces year-round.
The fabric regulates temperature effectively — it provides warmth in cool conditions but doesn't trap heat like synthetic materials. You can wear the jacket over a tee in a 65-degree room without overheating, or layer it over a flannel when you're heading outside into 40-degree weather.
Our Navy colorway works with virtually everything and hides wear beautifully. It pairs equally well with denim, chinos, or canvas pants and looks appropriate in both casual and smart-casual settings.
Olive is a close second for versatility and offers great earth-tone compatibility with fall and winter wardrobes. Both colors develop rich patina as they age, with the Navy deepening and the Olive taking on warm undertones.
