Bighorn Waxed Shirt Jacket | Flint and Tinder

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

Our Bighorn Waxed Shirt Jacket is built for the kind of days where the weather can't make up its mind. We crafted this American-made layer from heavyweight waxed cotton canvas that shrugs off light rain and wind while developing a rich patina over time.

Inside, we added diamond-quilted insulation through the body and sleeves to keep you warm without bulk. The shirt-jacket silhouette means it layers comfortably over tees and flannels but still fits under heavier coats when temperatures really drop. Dual chest pockets with snap closures keep essentials secure, while the corduroy collar adds a refined touch that works equally well on trails or downtown.

We designed the Bighorn for guys who need gear that works as hard as they do — whether you're splitting wood, running weekend errands, or heading out for a cold-weather hike. This is the kind of jacket that only gets better with wear.

Waxed Canvas Construction & Weather Resistance

Waxed Canvas Construction & Weather Resistance

The Flint and Tinder Bighorn waxed shirt jacket starts with an 8-ounce cotton canvas that we treat with a proprietary wax finish. This process creates a fabric that naturally repels water while remaining breathable — you’ll stay dry in drizzle or light snow without feeling clammy inside.

Unlike synthetic shells that wear out or delaminate, waxed canvas actually improves with age. The finish develops creases, fades, and character marks that tell the story of where you’ve been. When the water resistance eventually diminishes after heavy use, you can re-wax the jacket at home to restore its protective qualities.

Insulation & Layering Versatility

Insulation & Layering Versatility

We quilted the entire interior of the Bighorn with diamond-pattern polyester fill that traps warmth without adding stiffness or bulk. The insulation extends through both the body and sleeves, creating consistent warmth distribution that prevents cold spots.

This mid-weight insulation makes the jacket incredibly versatile across seasons. In autumn and spring, wear it as your primary outer layer over a tee or button-down. When winter hits, the trim fit allows you to layer it under our heavier shell jackets without feeling restricted.

Pockets & Functional Details

Pockets & Functional Details

Both chest pockets feature snap-button flaps sized to hold your phone, wallet, or a small notebook securely. The flaps keep contents protected from rain and prevent items from sliding out when you bend or crouch.

Inside, we included a single zippered pocket on the left chest — ideal for keys, cash, or anything you need quick access to without opening the front. The corduroy collar can be snapped closed at the throat for added warmth on windy days, or left open for a more casual look.

Perfect weight for fall and spring
I've worn this jacket nearly every day since it arrived three weeks ago. The waxed canvas keeps me dry during morning dog walks, and the insulation is just right — not too hot, not too light. Already seeing some wear patterns starting to form on the elbows and I love how it's aging.

Finally a jacket that fits right
I'm 6'2" and usually jackets are either too short or too tight in the shoulders. The Bighorn fits perfectly with room to layer a flannel underneath. The sleeve length is spot-on and the body length actually covers my belt. Quality is outstanding.

Tough enough for real work
I run a landscaping crew and needed something that could handle outdoor work without looking like a technical jacket. This thing takes abuse like a champ. Caught on branches, dirt, rain — it just keeps going and looks better every week.

Worth every penny
Not gonna lie, I hesitated at the price. But after wearing it for two months I totally get it. The construction is miles above anything I've bought from mall brands, and knowing it's made in the USA sealed the deal. This jacket will outlast five cheap alternatives.

Looks great dressed up or casual
I wear this over a dress shirt for client meetings and over a hoodie on weekends. It works in both settings without looking out of place. The corduroy collar is a nice touch that elevates it beyond standard work jackets.

Warmth without bulk
I hate feeling like the Michelin Man in puffy jackets. The Bighorn keeps me warm in 30-degree weather without making me look twice my size. The quilted lining does its job without adding unnecessary thickness.

Bighorn Waxed Shirt Jacket Questions

The Bighorn runs true to size with a relaxed fit through the chest and shoulders. We designed it to layer comfortably over a flannel or lightweight sweater while still maintaining a clean silhouette. If you prefer a slimmer fit or plan to wear it primarily over tees, consider sizing down. The body length falls past the belt line on most guys, and the sleeves are cut long enough to cover your wrists even with arms extended.

The waxed finish provides excellent water resistance for light rain, drizzle, and snow, but it's not fully waterproof like a rubberized shell. In steady downpours lasting more than 15-20 minutes, water may eventually penetrate high-contact areas. The wax treatment causes water to bead and roll off rather than soaking through immediately, which is ideal for daily weather variability and light precipitation.

The Bighorn works well in winter temperatures down to around 25-30°F when worn over a mid-weight base layer. For colder conditions, it layers easily under a heavier shell jacket without restricting movement. The diamond-quilted insulation provides solid warmth for moderate winter days, morning commutes, and outdoor activities where you're generating body heat.

When you notice water no longer beading on the surface, clean the jacket according to care instructions and let it dry completely. Apply a waxed canvas reproofing product like Otter Wax or Filson's Wax evenly across the exterior using a cloth, paying extra attention to elbows, shoulders, and high-wear zones. Hang the jacket in a warm room or use a hair dryer on low heat to help the wax absorb into the fibers. One treatment typically restores full water resistance for another season of wear.

The Bighorn features full diamond-quilted insulation through both the body and sleeves, making it our warmest waxed shirt jacket. Our standard waxed shirt jacket has no insulation and works best for layering or milder conditions. The quilted waxed shirt jacket has lighter insulation in the body only, with uninsulated sleeves. The Bighorn also includes a corduroy collar and slightly longer body length compared to our trucker-style waxed jackets.

With regular wear, the factory wax treatment typically maintains strong water resistance for 6-12 months, depending on use frequency and conditions. Areas that flex repeatedly — like elbows and shoulders — will show wear first as the wax breaks down. This is normal and part of how waxed canvas ages. Most customers re-wax their jacket once per year to maintain optimal weather protection, though the jacket remains fully functional even as the finish develops patina.

Yes, the Bighorn includes one interior zippered pocket on the left chest, sized to securely hold your phone, wallet, or keys. The zipper keeps contents protected even during active movement. The exterior features two chest pockets with snap-button flaps for additional storage of items you need quick access to throughout the day.
