Flint and Tinder Rancher Jacket | American-Made Workwear
The Flint and Tinder Rancher Jacket is our answer to the classic barn coat — built for work, styled for everyday wear. We construct every jacket from heavyweight 10 oz. waxed canvas that weathers beautifully over time, developing a worn-in patina unique to your life outdoors.
Inside, a diamond-quilted polyester lining adds warmth without bulk, while corduroy-lined hand pockets keep your fingers comfortable on cold mornings. The snap-front closure and button cuffs offer easy adjustability, and dual chest pockets with flaps store essentials within reach. We reinforce high-stress points with bar-tack stitching and cut each jacket with a slightly relaxed fit that layers over flannels and sweaters without restricting movement.
Made in the USA, this jacket is designed to serve you season after season — whether you're stacking firewood, checking fences, or heading into town on a crisp fall day.

Canvas & Construction Details

We source our waxed canvas from one of the last American mills still producing traditional workwear fabric. The 10 oz. weight strikes the ideal balance between flexibility and abrasion resistance, while the wax treatment sheds light rain and resists wind without the stiffness of synthetic coatings.
Every seam is double-stitched with heavy-duty thread, and we reinforce pocket corners and snap points with bar-tack stitching to handle daily wear. The diamond-quilted lining is attached at the shoulders and hem, allowing the jacket to move with you while maintaining structure. Over time, the wax finish will fade in high-wear areas, revealing the rich cotton canvas underneath and creating a jacket that tells your story.
Fit & Sizing Guide

The Rancher Jacket is cut with a relaxed fit through the shoulders and chest, designed to accommodate layering without feeling boxy. We recommend ordering your usual size if you plan to wear it over t-shirts or lightweight flannels. If you regularly layer over heavy sweaters or hoodies, consider sizing up one size.
The jacket hits just below the waist on most wearers, providing coverage without interfering with movement. Sleeves are cut long enough to cover your wrists when your arms are extended, and the button cuffs let you adjust the opening for a custom fit. Our size chart includes chest, shoulder, and length measurements to help you find your ideal fit.
Care & Maintenance

Breaking In Your Jacket
Your Rancher Jacket will arrive with a slightly stiff hand due to the wax finish. This is normal and will soften with wear over the first few weeks. To speed the break-in process, wear the jacket regularly and work the fabric with your hands, focusing on elbow and shoulder areas.
Cleaning & Re-Waxing
Spot-clean stains with a damp cloth and mild soap, then air-dry completely. For deeper cleaning, hand-wash in cold water with a canvas-specific cleaner, hang to dry, and re-wax using a bar of waxed canvas conditioner applied in thin layers with a lint-free cloth. Avoid machine washing or dry cleaning, as both will strip the wax treatment and can damage the quilted lining.

Common Questions About the Rancher Jacket
The Rancher Jacket is designed as a mid-weight layer suitable for temperatures between 30°F and 60°F. The diamond-quilted polyester lining provides moderate insulation, making it comfortable for cool fall days or layering under a shell in winter. If you need maximum warmth for sub-freezing temperatures, consider layering it over a wool sweater or under a heavier outer shell.
The waxed canvas is water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. It will shed light rain and drizzle effectively, but prolonged exposure to heavy rain will eventually allow water to soak through. The wax treatment can be refreshed periodically with a canvas wax bar to maintain water resistance. For sustained wet conditions, we recommend wearing a waterproof shell over the jacket.
The Rancher Jacket fits slightly more relaxed than Filson's tailored jackets but less boxy than standard Carhartt work jackets. If you typically wear a Medium in Carhartt, you'll likely wear a Medium in our jacket as well. The main difference is in the shoulder and chest, where we've added room for layering without creating excess fabric around the waist.
We do not recommend machine washing, as it will strip the wax treatment and can damage the quilted lining. Instead, spot-clean stains with a damp cloth and mild soap. For deeper cleaning, hand-wash in cold water with a canvas-specific cleaner, then hang to dry and re-wax. Proper care will extend the life of your jacket significantly.
The jacket is currently available in three colors: Navy, Field Tan, and Black. Navy and Field Tan show the wax patina most visibly as the jacket ages, while Black maintains a more uniform appearance over time. All three colors feature the same construction and materials.
Yes, every Rancher Jacket is cut, sewn, and finished in our Pennsylvania factory using American-made waxed canvas. Most customers report that the jacket begins to soften noticeably after 10-15 wears, with full break-in occurring around the two-month mark of regular use. The break-in process is accelerated by wearing the jacket during active work or outdoor activities. The stiffness is a natural characteristic of new waxed canvas and indicates a durable, tightly woven fabric.
